Dust, Wind and Your AC in Amarillo

Amarillo's wind carries dust, seeds and debris that end up in filters, outdoor coils and ducts. A little regular care keeps the AC running efficiently through the summer.

Filters fill fast

Windy months load filters much faster than the package suggests. Check them monthly from spring through fall and replace them when they look grey, not on a fixed schedule alone.

Outdoor coil

Dust builds up between the thin fins of the outdoor coil, cutting airflow and making the compressor work harder. With the power off at the disconnect, rinse it gently from the inside out with a garden hose.

Don't pressure wash

High-pressure water bends fins and drives dirt deeper into the coil. A gentle spray works better and protects the coil.

Keep the area clear

Trim grass and plants back at least two feet from the unit, and don't let lawn clippings blow onto it.

Seal the house

Dust that gets inside ends up in filters and on furniture. Sealing gaps around doors and windows helps both comfort and cleanliness.

Return ducts

Leaky return ducts in the attic pull dust straight into the system. Sealing them reduces dust indoors.

After dust storms

After a big dust event, check the filter and the outdoor coil before the next hot day.

Tune-ups

A spring tune-up includes a thorough coil cleaning that's hard to match at home.

Mind the dryer vent

A dryer vent that blows lint onto the outdoor unit clogs its coil quickly. Keep them apart, or redirect the vent.

Indoor dust

If furniture gathers dust a day after cleaning, the house is pulling in outside air somewhere. Sealing gaps around doors, windows and attic hatches cuts dust and drafts together.
