When the AC quits on a hot Panhandle afternoon, the house heats up fast. A few checks can rule out simple causes before the technician arrives.

Thermostat

Check that it's set to cool, below the room temperature, with the fan on auto. Replace weak batteries and give the system several minutes to respond after any change.

Breaker and disconnect

Look for a tripped breaker in the panel and make sure the disconnect box by the outdoor unit is on. Don't keep resetting a breaker that trips again straight away.

Dusty filter

Wind-blown dust clogs filters quickly in Amarillo. A choked filter cuts airflow, freezes the coil and leaves you with weak air. Replace it before anything else.

Dirty outdoor coil

Dust, cottonwood fluff and grass build up on the outdoor coil and make the unit overheat on hot days. With the power off, rinse it gently from the inside out with a garden hose.

Ice on the lines

Ice on the copper lines or indoor coil means poor airflow or low refrigerant. Turn cooling off, run the fan to thaw it and change the filter. If it ices again, book a repair.

Humming, no start

A unit that hums but won't start often has a failed capacitor or contactor, parts that wear out in summer heat. A technician should replace them.

Drain line

Even in dry Amarillo the AC makes water. A blocked drain can overflow or trip a safety switch that shuts the system off.

Storm damage

Hail and wind can bend fins, dent cabinets and knock debris into the fan. After a storm, look the unit over before running it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my AC run but not cool the house?
A dirty filter or outdoor coil, low refrigerant, a failing capacitor or leaky attic ducts are the usual causes.
Can hail damage my AC?
Yes. Hail can flatten the fins on the outdoor coil, which cuts airflow and efficiency. A technician can comb them straight or advise if the coil needs replacing.
