Pampa is a city of 16,867 people (2020) and the county seat of Gray County, northeast of Amarillo. Each August it hosts the Top o' Texas Rodeo, and the White Deer Land Company Museum downtown shows the area's ranching history.
What that means for your AC
Pampa is a long drive from Amarillo's supply houses, so a breakdown in peak season can take longer to fix. A spring tune-up, a spare filter and the system's model and age written down make any repair quicker; see tune-ups.
Older town, older systems
Many Pampa homes date from the town's railroad and ranching past, and older houses may still have original ductwork or furnaces that have outlived their expected life. A careful check of venting and the heat exchanger matters on any old gas furnace.
Glasgow, Sutton, Pampa
The Santa Fe Railroad was built through the area in 1888, and George Tyng, manager of the White Deer Lands ranch, laid out the townsite around the new station. The town was called Glasgow, then Sutton, before taking the name Pampa, from a Quechua word meaning "plain", after the grasslands of South America that the flat country reminded people of. Wide-open plains mean wind and dust year-round, so filters and outdoor coils need regular attention; see dust, wind and your AC.
